Pit and fissure sealants are fillings done in the pits of milk teeth so as to prevent food lodgment and recurrent decay.
Fluoride treatment is done by applying fluoride gels to the milk teeth and permanent teeth at proper age intervals to make the teeth stronger by remineralization and also resistant to decay.
The milk teeth are generally filled by glass ionomer cementes to make them resistant to further decay.
In cases where the decay has involved the nerve tissue, root canal treatment becomes imperative to preserve the tooth till the time it is replaced by the permanent counterpart.
In cases where the milk tooth has to be removed the space occupied by it is maintained by making a space maintainer which is periodically altered so as to properly accommodate the growth of the jaw and also to permit smooth eruption of the permanent tooth. The space maintainer prevents the adjacent teeth from shifting into the missing tooth`s place thereby averting problems of crowding and malposition of the permanent teeth.
