Submucus Fibrosis

blog post

This is the Inability to open the mouth due to the habit of Gutkha/Betel Quid chewing. The mucosa or skin within the mouth is very delicate and insult from continuous use of betel quid/gutkha causes it to become hard, leathery and ultimately affects the mouth opening.

Subsequently intolerance to spicy food develops and has to be treated aggressively by injecting steroids into the fibrous bands and forcing the mouth open to break the bands and if this does not help then major surgical procedure using grafts from other parts of the body are used to replace the area where the fibrous bands have been cut and removed to facilitate mouth opening.
